Top Ten Things To See and Do in Paris

If you have only so much time to visit Paris, these are my top picks for a visit here. These ten are undoubtly the best. I have visited much of all that there’s to see in Paris, again and again. Being a Parisian myself and a serial tourist elsewhere, making a top ten list in my own city couldn’t get better.

1. The Eiffel Tower

Fun Facts About the Eiffel Tower 1. It took only two years, two months and five days to construct and it was commissioned on 31st March, 1889 2. It might well be in Paris but a large number of Parisians have actually never climbed it! Why? Hmm, well, you see it's here, we see it everyday. So we can always go climb it (except that we finally don't) or whatever and whenever, right? Voilà!:) 3. It wasn't meant to be permanent. It was supposed to be demolished some years later after the fair. But Gustave somehow succeeded in preventing that from happening.

2. Notre Dame Cathedral

The Top Ten Things To Do in Paris 2. Notre Dame Cathedral When you think of Paris, the first thing that comes to the mind might be the Eiffel Tower. However, the Notre Dame Cathedral is the single most visited monument here, counting at least 13 million visitors in 2018 alone. Constructed in 1163, it was however, damaged by a big fire that destroyed much of its roof and its spire collapsed – see the two photos and my video coming next.

3. Arch de Triomphe – Arc of Triumph

The Top Ten Things To Do in Paris 3. Arch de Triomphe / Arc of Triumph It was ordered to be constructed by Napoleon Bonaparte to commemorate the victory of the war at Austerlitz in the year 1806. At 50 metres high, you get great views of Paris by climbing to the top of it as it also overlooks the Champs Elysées. NB just don’t sit in the road like I did!:)

4. The Louvre Museum

The Top Ten Things To Do in Paris 4. The Louvre Museum It's currently the most visited art museum here and in the world. Originally built as a royal palace and opened in 1793, it has a collection of about 35000 pieces of art.

5. Château de Versailles – Versailles Castle

The Top Ten Things To Do in Paris 5. Château de Versailles – Versailles Castle France is well kown for its sprawling castles and palaces. But if there was only one among these, it would be Versailles. Built from 1623, it used to be the royal residence of the Kingdom of France starting with Louis XIV who built it, until the year 1789.

6. Sacré Coeur – Sacred Heart Basilica

The Top Ten Things To Do in Paris 6. Sacré Coeur – Sacred Heart Basilica From a distance, it appears to be like a white domed castle. But the cathedral was built in 1919 in Paris' famed Montmarte neighborhood. There's a square ( Place du Tertre) a few blocks away – not to miss, where several artists work daily and were Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh used to work too.

7. The Seine

The Top Ten Things To Do in Paris 7. The Seine The river divides Paris into two. Many of the most coveted attractions can be seen while cruising on the Seine. Several boat companies along the the river offer rides and there is no better way to see the city while enjoying every bit of the moment.

8. Musée d’Orsay

The Top Ten Things To Do in Paris 8. Musée d'Orsay Known for its vast impressionist art collections by the likes of, among others, Van Gogh, Claude Monet and Cezanne; Orsay is the second most visited museum here in town. That gives reason for a visit.

9. Moulin Rouge

The Top Ten Things To Do in Paris 9. Moulin Rouge This one is a famed cabaret and the birthplace of the French cancan dance. It's found in the Pigalle neighborhood which is the official "undeclared" redlight district of Paris.

10. Avenue des Champs Élysées

The Top Ten Things To Do in Paris 10. Avenue des Champs Élysées Stretching from the Place de la Concorde up to the Arc de Triomphe for 1.9km, it's known here as the "most beautiful avenue in the world." At least 300,000 set foot on it each day. Its wide array of monuments, world famous brands, events and location make it the number one shopping address in town. So there you've got the top 10.
