It’s often termed as the Venice of the North. And that is not without reason. The capital city of Scandinavia is indeed one of the most beautiful in all of Europe. Here are my top picks among the best to do and see in Stockholm.
1. Gamla Stan
Gamla Stan is the old town in Stockholm. The city itself was founded here in 1252. Gamla is also one of the well-known, well preserved medieval cities in Europe. It’s not just beautiful, but many of Stockholm’s famous attractions are also found here or not far.
2. The Vasa Museum
Vasa Museum is the most visited in all of Scandinavia. Vasa itself is the name of the famous war ship housed in the museum that sank in Stockholm in 1628 and it was recovered later after 333 years, yes, 333 years later – all intact!
3. Stadshuset – The Stockholm City Hall
It may only be the administrative centre of Stockholm, but the City Hall is one actually one of the major tourist attractions here. The Nobel Prize banquet takes place here. Overlooking Gamla Stan and many other famous landmarks parts of the city, it also offers some of the most stunning views of Stockholm.
4. The Royal Palace
Only a few minutes from the main square at Gamla Stan is the official residence of the King of Sweden. It is one of the largest palaces in Europe with 600 rooms and many museums to itself. It was built in the 18th century. One important fact to note here is that the queen herself has her own official residence Drottingholm island which is about 30 minutes from here.
5. Nobel Museum
The Nobel is without a doubt, the most coveted, most prestigious award. To learn all there’s to know about the history of the prizes and perhaps be inspired for one, take a visit here!
6. The Metro, it’s the longest gallery in the world!
In Stockholm, the fun starts before you even reach the city centre. The fun starts in the subway. This is not your average subway, it’s a whole gallery. In fact, it’s the longest art gallery in the whole world.
